In October, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) announced a proposed boundary expansion of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, adding approximately 22,000 acres to the existing refuge—including lands currently held by Twin Pines Minerals, LLC.
If passed, USFWS says the expansion would allow it to work with willing landowners to explore voluntary management actions that would protect the swamp’s hydrologic integrity, conserve wetlands and wildlife habitat, and fortify fuel reduction zones that can safeguard the swamp and landowners from wildfires.
This is an important step toward increasing long-term protections for the Okefenokee Swamp. Join us in saying YES to USFWS’ proposed boundary expansion by December 9th!
Deadline Extended, Virtual Meeting in the works
USFWS has extended the deadline to submit comments to December 9th. They are also in the process of planning a virtual public comment meeting. Stay tuned here or check their website for updates.
“This is an excellent opportunity to support efforts that ensure the long-term protection of Georgia’s ‘Wild Heart.'”
