Dig deeper into the fascinating world of loggerhead sea turtle natural history and conservation as we tag along with the Caretta Research Project‘s sea turtle biologists on Wassaw Island! Discover first-hand the fascinating research and education happening on Wassaw and all along Georgia’s coast. You’ll learn about CRP’s and the Georgia Sea Turtle Cooperative’s innovative technology and round-the-clock efforts during summer sea turtle season\, and talk to CRP biologists—all while enjoying one of the most pristine natural spaces on our coast. Our guide\, Kristen Zemaitis\, CRP Biologist & Educator\, and staff from the US Fish and Wildlife Service will also provide unique insight into the ecology\, history\, and federal management projects of Wassaw Island. We’ll keep an eye out for hatchling tracks! A portion of the event proceeds will go to support the Caretta Research Project. \nThis field trip is open to ages 15 and up; be prepared to walk over two miles. Please know we will take an open skiff (boat) to the island and ride in UTVs on the island. Participants will need to pack their own lunch\, bug spray\, and sunscreen. This field trip (like all sea turtle work!) will happen rain or shine. We will launch at 9 am and will return to the mainland by 2:30 pm. \nThis trip is sold out. Meet with your legislators to discuss the importance of protecting the swamp and urge them to sign on to House Bill 71: The Okefenokee Protection Act. Afternoon slots will typically be in a more formal\, scheduled meeting style\, while morning slots tend to be more informal and fast paced. \nOnce you have selected a date and time\, a One Hundred Miles staff member will meet you at the Capitol to escort you to your meetings and show you around. You are responsible for your own transportation to and from the Capitol. Navigating the legislative session is difficult and can change quickly. Please be patient and flexible.
