SUMMARY:SSI Dog Sunset Social: Wildlife\, Beaches\, and Leashes
DESCRIPTION:SSI Dog Sunset Social: Wildlife\, Beaches\, and Leashes\nSunday\, July 7 • 6 – 8 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin members of Georgia Coastal Bird Ambassadors at St Simons Island’s Coast Guard Beach access point to learn how we can share our wildlife beaches with sea turtles\, shorebirds\, and dogs! We will provide treats and surprises for you and your dog best friend!\n\nIf you (and your pup) would like to volunteer for this event\, contact Allie Hayser at ahayser@manomet.org. Learn more in the Facebook event.\n—————————————————————————Our Georgia coast is internationally recognized as an important bird area and provides habitat for at least 300\,000 shorebirds every year. Beaches are critical nesting\, feeding\, and roosting sites for local shorebirds\, and for shorebirds that travel on their migratory route as they move between South America and their Arctic nesting sites.\n\nGould’s Inlet provides shorebird habitat for rare nesting Wilson’s Plovers\, threatened Red Knots\, American Oystercatchers\, and endangered Piping Plovers\, as well as nesting seabird habitat for priority species like Black Skimmers\, Least Terns\, and threatened Gull-billed Terns. Additionally\, the area provides an opportunity to create connections between visitors and this important landscape\, while protecting habitat for shorebirds\, seabirds and other wildlife.\n\nSt. Simons Island’s beaches are a popular destination for the recreational and scenic values they provide\, but the northern section\, Gould’s Inlet is a stunning example of dynamic\, natural\, barrier island beach ecosystem that supports many plant and wildlife species. We can raise awareness about the delicate nature of this ecosystem to balance the needs of people and wildlife that depend on this area\, and help recreationalists better appreciate St. Simon’s coastal ecology. Gould’s Inlet is a well-known birding destination throughout the year\, with an active nesting area and an established bird stewarding program.\n\nAsking beach users to voluntarily leash dogs in this area can provide significant benefits for wildlife. Highlighting this section of the beach as a Wildlife Beach Area will further raise awareness and generate a culture of pride and protection among the local community.\n\nManomet will collaborate with the Glynn County\, GA DNR and local community groups to use signage where appropriate\, support a steward program\, and provide consistent messaging about the benefits of the Wildlife Beach Area.
