Sapelo is home to the Hog(g) Hummock Community\, the last island-based Gullah Geechee community in Georgia\, and vast wildlife conservation areas managed by the State of Georgia and University of Georgia research institutions. \nJoin OHM’s Justice Strategist and Sapelo descendant\, Jazz Watts\, and Coastal Education Coordinator Stephanie Chewning for “A Day on Sapelo Island.” You’ll walk away with a better understanding of Sapelo’s extraordinary ecological and cultural history—past\, present\, and future. \nSapelo is ferry-access only\, and limited spots are available—pre-registration is required. We will eat lunch together at Miss Lulu’s Café on the island (lunch is provided in your ticket price) and return to the mainland around 3 pm. \nYou will receive full details in your confirmation email after registration. DESCRIPTION:Sapelo Summer Symposium\nFriday\, July 18 • 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity leaders\, local researchers\, coastal managers\, and coastal residents are encouraged to come out to Sapelo and will spend the morning listening to lightening talks from professionals working around the island. After lunch\, we will stop in the community to learn about initatives and projects our partners at SICARS are working on and then our attendees will join us at the SINERR Education Lab to view our student research poster session and learn about more about current projects that help us to better understand our local estuarine systems! Poster presenters will be undergraduate and graduate students from local universities and colleges who have been conducting field work here on Sapelo. Attendees will spend the remaining time enjoying our beach with a naturalist guided beach sein and learning about our vast ecosystem! \nSpace is limited so reserve soon! Ferry ride\, southern-style lunch\, and on-island transportation is included in the ticket cost.
