SUMMARY:Naturalist 101 Lecture: Conserving Loggerhead Sea Turtles
DESCRIPTION:Naturalist 101 Lecture: Conserving Loggerhead Sea Turtles\nThursday\, September 11 • OHM Savannah Office\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLoggerhead sea turtles are a beloved species along Georgia’s coast. For more than 50 years\, Wassaw Island’s Caretta Research Project has been dedicated to protecting and ensuring the full recovery of our loggerhead population. Through education\, research\, and conservation initiatives\, CRP has contributed to an eight-fold increase in loggerhead nesting since 1973—with one of the longest-term data sets on Georgia’s coast and across the world! \nJoin us at OHM’s Savannah Office on Thursday\, September 11th for our Naturalist 101 lecture “Conserving Loggerhead Sea Turtles: An Inside Look at one of Georgia’s Longest Running Sea Turtle Programs.” Kristen Zemaitis\, CRP Biologist & Educator\, will share invaluable insight into CRP’s work on Wassaw and their ongoing efforts to protect this iconic species. \nDoors open at 6:30 pm. The lecture begins at 7 pm\, with Q&A to follow. Light refreshments will be served. This event is free\, but we ask that you RSVP so we can plan accordingly. We will also livestream the event via Facebook; please tune in and participate virtually if you can’t make it in person! \nRegister for this free lecture here.

SUMMARY:Trawl to Trash Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Trawl to Trash Workshop\nTuesday\, June 10 @ 6 PM • Savannah OHM Office\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn an effort to prevent litter from entering the marine environment\, Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant launched the Trawl to Trash program\, which engages the public in outreach and stewardship activities that educate communities about the impacts of marine debris and encourage use of the recycled trawl bags to collect and remove debris from Georgia’s waterways. \nIn this workshop you will learn how to prevent litter from entering the marine environment and inspire behavior change in Georgia’s coastal communities\, ultimately reducing the negative impacts of marine debris on the coast. Program participants will learn how to construct their own trawl to trash bags using recycled shrimp net material so that it can be used to collect marine debris along the coast! This is a family-friendly program\, geared toward an audience of age 8 and up. \nThis event is free to attend. Due to limited space\, registration is required. Click here to register! \nThanks to support from the National Sea Grant College Program\, Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant is able to provide this Trawl to Trash Program in our community.

SUMMARY:Naturalist 101 Lecture: A Study of Gray's Reef with Sarah Porter
DESCRIPTION:Naturalist 101: A Study of Gray’s Reef with Sarah Porter (Lecture)\nThursday\, April 17 • OHM Office (Savannah) @ 7 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary is Georgia’s underwater wonderland. This natural live-bottom reef is teeming with marine life and is part of the endangered North Atlantic right whale’s calving ground. Loggerhead turtles rest at the reef\, and scientists have identified more than 200 fish species! But because of its location 19 miles off the Georgia coast\, few people even know about this amazing resource\, let alone get to see it up close. Here’s your chance to change that! Sarah Porter\, the Chapter Director of Gray’s Reef\, will bring the reef to you as she shares the secrets of this astonishing place and gives us a peek into the ongoing research taking place in the Sanctuary. \nJoin us at OHM’s new Savannah office (1702 Bull Street\, Savannah) on Thursday\, April 17. Doors open at 6:30 PM; the lecture will begin at 7. If you can’t come in person\, join us online! \nRegister for this free lecture now!
