One Hundred Miles celebrates new Darien office with Open House on January 14

For Immediate Release: January 3, 2025

Darien, GeorgiaOne Hundred Miles (OHM) has put down roots in Darien! For more than ten years, One Hundred Miles has served Georgia’s 100-mile coast through advocacy, education, and community engagement. Since first opening its doors in Brunswick in 2013, the organization has grown to a team of thirteen and is excited to nestle its feet into McIntosh’s sandy soil.

“Our Darien office is a way to strengthen the mid-coast voice for the preservation of our communities and natural resources,” says Susan Inman, Mid Coast Advocate and McIntosh resident.

The office is located at 1026 Blounts Crossing (Suite A), a busy junction on the north end of Darien. Though small, the space concretizes OHM’s commitment to working alongside McIntosh partners to protect Georgia’s coastal environment and communities. Most recently, the organization worked with Sapelo-based organizations (including Sapelo Island Cultural And Revitalization Society [SICARS], Save Our Legacy Ourself [SOLO], Hog Hammock Community Foundation, Allen Bailey Foundation [ABF], and The Sapelo Project) to organize a referendum to repeal a 2023 zoning ordinance that continues to threaten the island and its Saltwater Gullah Geechee residents. OHM has also aided efforts to honor and preserve Butler Island’s Weeping Time legacy and the historic Huston House (destroyed last year in a fire) in partnership with the Butler Island Coalition; and establish Dark Sky designations throughout the county to boost eco-tourism and protect native and migratory wildlife.

“We want people to have a space where organizations and communities alike can mobilize and hold their local government to account,” says Jazz Watts, OHM Justice Strategist and Sapelo Descendant. “Whether it’s about River Road, Butler Island, Dark Sky Initiatives, or Hog Hummock, it’s important to have spaces available where we, the people, together, can protect and preserve culture and community for our future generations.”

Join members of the OHM team on Tuesday, January 14 for an Open House. Swing by 1026 Blounts Crossing (Suite A) any time between 3 and 6 PM to explore the office, meet the staff, and discover ways you can get involved in protecting Georgia’s coast.

“OHM values our partnership with groups and advocates in McIntosh County,” says Megan Desrosiers, OHM President & CEO. “We are excited to open a new space that can serve as a gathering place for us to continue collaborative work.”
