Meet your educators, Stephanie & Eric.
Stephanie Chewning

Stephanie’s love of the ocean began in her childhood along the beaches of Stone Harbor, New Jersey. Her passion for protecting these special places and helping others’ experience their wonder brought her to One Hundred Miles. Stephanie brings years of naturalist knowledge, outdoor education experience, and connections with people and places across the coast to every session.
Spark Bird: American Oystercatcher
“When I first moved to Georgia in 2006, I taught environmental education on Cumberland Island. Every time I taught on the beach, I saw pairs of oystercatchers and quickly fell in love with them. The best part was engaging the kids with these odd birds and their bright orange bills—every time, I got just as excited as they did, and I still do!”
Eric Swanson
Advocacy Educator • Join Eric for MB Savannah!
Birding is one of Eric’s favorite activities—as one can clearly see from his experience as a falconer, as well as an outdoor educator, science communicator, and naturalist. He relishes opportunities to learn with people of all ages and backgrounds, with a primary goal of working to make our natural world more accessible so we can advocate for and protect it.
Spark Bird: American Redstart
“A male American Redstart danced around my feet when I was walking through a park shortly after college. I had always loved watching birds, had taken an ornithology class, I even had spent countless hours counting hawks and eagles, but that moment made me a birder. Not long after I used one of my first ‘grownup’ paychecks to buy the binoculars I still use to this day. For that reason, redstarts will always hold a special place with me, their vibrant colors and single-minded focus on food is still a treat to watch every migration.”
