Horseshoe Crab - $25

Atlantic Horseshoe Crab (Limulus polyphemus)

This “living fossil” is one of Earth’s oldest species–even older than the dinosaurs! Despite their common name, horseshoe crabs are not crabs, but are more closely related to arachnids like spiders, scorpions, ticks and mites. During the spring and summer, they migrate in large numbers towards sandy beaches and congregate in the shallow water to breed. Their eggs provide a valuable source of food for many species including our coast’s threatened red knots.

Sturgeon - $50

Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrhynchus)

One of the oldest fish species in the world, the Atlantic sturgeon has five rows of bony plates known as scutes and may very well look the same today as it did during the age of dinosaurs.

When settlers first came to North America, sturgeon were in abundance, but overfishing and water pollution have made sturgeon threatened, endangered, and even locally extinct in many of its previous habitats.

Indigo - $100

Eastern Indigo Snake (Drymarchon couperi)

A docile snake, the indigo is the longest native snake species in the United States. It travels through the forest depending on the season, which explains the origin of its Greek name, “lord of the forest.”

Given its docile nature, it will often cohabitate in dens with gopher tortoises. But the indigo is a threatened species in Georgia. Loss of habitat, the illegal pet trade, and human hunting have reduced their numbers across the state.

Oystercatcher - $250

American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliates)

True to its name, the oystercatcher feeds on oysters, clams, and mussels. During the breeding season, adults make several nests and line each with shells and pebbles before deciding on just the right nest. These migrating shorebirds lay their eggs right on the beach; their eggs and chicks are camouflaged and easily crushed by beachgoers and dogs. They are shy birds and vulnerable to human disturbance and the development of their beach habitats.

Loggerhead - $500

Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta)

Every summer, the sandy dunes of Georgia’s barrier islands are host to hundreds of seasonal visitors–nesting loggerhead sea turtles, who journey onto land to lay their soft, leathery eggs in the sand. Hatchlings escape from the nest at night, evading natural predators and bright artificial lights as they scramble to the sea.

Once in the water, only the female will ever return to land, after more than 30 years at sea—but only about one in four thousand sea turtles will survive to reproductive maturity.

Right Whale- $750

North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis)

As Georgia’s state marine mammal, the right whale’s only known calving grounds are just off the Georgia and north Florida coasts. With only about 400 individuals left in the wild, it is one of the most endangered species on the planet.

Their name alludes to one of the causes behind their early decline—whalers considered them the “right” whale to hunt. Today, right whales face significant threats from ship strikes and entanglements in lobster and snow crab fisheries.

Spartina Society- $1,000+

Spartina Marsh Grass (Spartina alterniflora)

Spartina is a dominant marsh grass found along our coastal Georgia. It was admired by the Greeks for its strength and is derived from the Greek spartine, meaning “cord.” An ancient name that flowed through history, Spartina is still called cordgrass today.

Coastal Georgia’s wide stretches of golden Spartina grass provided the muse for Sidney Lanier’s iconic poem, The Marshes of Glynn.

Like the marsh grass that provides support for the base of our primary dunes and salt marsh, your membership in the Spartina Society forms the base of our mission at One Hundred Miles. Join the Spartina Society >>
