Preservation & Progress
A false dichotomy between conservation and progress—or “profit over people”—plagues decision-makers and community leaders in McIntosh. Inequitable systems empower select people to make decisions without consulting the people those decisions most impact. OHM is committed to working alongside communities and decision-makers, exploring mutually beneficial projects through eco-tourism and heritage preservation, and holding corrupt and procedurally errant public servants accountable.
What’s happening in McIntosh County?
Darien Owl Trail
A remarkable community of American Barn owls (Tyto furcata) have adapted to Darien’s urban environment and now make their homes in trees around town. In 2025, OHM, the City of Darien, Birds Georgia, and Coastal Georgia Audubon revived the Darien Owl Trail. Accessible by foot, bike, or car, the trail invites visitors and residents to explore and protect the barn owls’ world—our own neighborhoods. The trail includes 8 trees marked with an owl sign and containing a large nesting box. Live feed from a wildlife camera coming soon!
Hogg Hummock Community on Sapelo Island
Sapelo’s historic Saltwater/Gullah Geechee community of Hog Hammock, also known as Hog(g) Hummock, is inhabited by descendants of formerly enslaved West Africans and is the last Saltwater/Gullah Geechee community on a Georgia barrier island. Amidst battles with local government, developers and corrupt systems, descendant organizations, partners, and individuals work hard to protect the land, waters, heritage, and ability to live on Sapelo.
Protecting the Night Sky
McIntosh County is situated in the center of Georgia’s coast and remains largely undeveloped. We have an opportunity here to establish a Dark Sky corridor that extends beyond McIntosh and protects vital habitat for wildlife while boosting local economies through ecotourism. Light pollution is reversible—and everyone can make a difference.
