Industrial Progress v. Public Health
Effingham has been sharing water with Chatham and Bryan Counties since 1945, when saltwater intrusion in the aquifer due to heightened industrial activity forced the region to resort to using surface water for drinking and industry. The counties agreed to establish a water intake on Abercorn Creek (a tributary of the Savannah River), currently managed by Savannah Water Resources. Industry and warehouse development increasingly strain the county’s water supply and community health.
What’s happening in Effingham County?
Abercorn Creek Water Intake
The Abercorn Creek water intake provides drinking water to about 400,000 residents (plus businesses) in the tri-county area. It is an imperative water supply, drawn from a river already suffering from overuse (the deepening of the Savannah harbor for port activity exacerbates this issue).
Effingham County has approved a warehouse development that will raze most of the forest in the bottom and righthand corner of this image.
Check out this crowd-sourced map showing warehouse expansion around Abercorn Creek. The red arrow indicates the location of the water intake. When Savannah Water Resources updated Abercorn Creek’s Source Water Assessment Plan in 2022, it was identified as being at “Medium High” risk for contamination—because of commercial and industrial development.
Ebenezer’s “Noxious Fumes”
Since a chemical spill at the America DRT plant in September 2023, residents of the Ebenezer area have demanded local, state, and federal agencies determine the source of lingering ‘noxious fumes’. After numerous investigations, including a crowd-sourced “Illness Surveillance” report by the GA Department of Public Health, the odor’s source remains unknown and officially poses “no threat to human health.” Residents still breathing the foul smell say otherwise, continuing to report stinky days, illness, and frustration at the lack of action.
