Not worth the risk
Limited oil and gas resources off the Atlantic coast would have negligible impacts on consumer prices and foreign oil dependencies, and any new jobs would come at the expense of existing state economies. Meanwhile, seismic testing disrupts or harms a variety of aquatic species, including the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. But perhaps most importantly, a catastrophic event would devastate our coast. Consider that the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill resulted in a $23 billion tourism loss over 3 years—not including impacts to seafood or real estate. Catch rates declined as much as 75% for oystermen and 80% for shrimpers, and 600 sea turtles and 700 dolphins were confirmed killed.
Offshore drilling and seismic testing? Not on our watch.
Even with the recent victories, we remain committed to continuing to monitor federal activities and ensuring that oil and gas exploration and drilling do not occur off Georgia’s coast.
It’s been a long fight, over multiple administrations—and you’ve stood with us all the way. Since 2014, OHM has worked with partner groups in Washington, D.C. to monitor the federal agencies’ permitting efforts and to lobby our members in Congress to protect Georgia’s fishing economy, tourism, and natural landscapes from the dangers of the oil and gas industry.
Our efforts contributed to many victories, including:
- More than 750,000 Georgians are represented by City Councils and Commissions that have passed local resolutions opposing oil and gas development.
- During the 2019 General Assembly, the Georgia House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed HR 48, a resolution opposing oil and gas development and seismic testing off Georgia’s coast. Watch the press conference announcing the state resolutions.
- Former GA State Senator William Ligon and coastal state delegates sent a letter to Brian Kemp requesting the Governor officially oppose offshore activities
- Following the passage of HR 48, Congressman Earl “Buddy” Carter requested that the Department of Interior exclude Georgia from the leasing plan allowing offshore drilling.
