Our Concerns
- This project is supported by the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Act, a programs that offers state grants for conservation projects. A parking lot expansion that destroys wetlands, dunes, and a forest is not a conservation project and would set a terrible precedent for misuse of GOSA funding in other parts of the state.
- Coast Guard Beach is a landmark on St. Simons and a lovely mix of accommodations, recreations, and nature. This proposal will destroy the maritime forest that makes this landmark so special—making is just like any other beach on the east coast.
- Bulldozing sand dunes at Coast Guard beach is a violation of the Shore Protection Act. Permits should be granted only for extenuating circumstances. Sand dunes stabilize our shoreline, provide important flood protection, and provide buffers against storms. While the County may need more parking, flattening the dunes will cause more problems than room for a few more cars is worth.
- Glynn County proposes clearcutting maritime forest (30-year-old live oaks and pines), to be replanted with grassy vegetation; this may “enhance the viewshed,” but it will destroy critical habitat for coastal wildlife, including painted buntings.
“Conservation funds should not be used to harm the very spaces they’re designated to protect.”
